Evan's Longest And Coldest Ride
The year was 2000, the week after New Year's. Picture 20 degrees outside in NYC, and I had my new LeMond Zurich ready for a long ride. I put on layers of technical clothing manufactured of polypropylene, neoprene, and other -enes on several continents, with a balaclava under my Bell helmet, and I set out over the George Washington Bridge.
After the first 60 miles, two counties away from NYC, on a poorly maintained road, I was riding slowly when I saw a fawn at the side of the road. We eyed each other warily, and I came to a stop only six feet away from the baby deer. He sniffed the ground under the snow, but stood his ground and didn't flee.
Any stop is a good time for a PowerBar, so I began to munch, and then wondered if this deer would appreciate oatmeal-raisin on a bleak winter day. I tossed a piece of PowerBar over to him, and he ate it right away. Then both of us having finished our snack, I sent him off into the woods.
There weren't any cars; it was just me and nature and my bike.
