Welding A Bicycle Seat
Around 1980, we had an expensive bicycle saddle that was perfect except it needed a little weld at one of the joints underneath. (This was before we learned to use an electric arc-welder, ourselves.) We noticed a welding truck outside repairing the metal railing next door, so I went out and asked the men if they would take a minute to fix my broken saddle. The saddle repair turned out to be awkward, and as these nice guys were struggling to get the welding rod in just the right place, they attracted a small crowd of observers, well-wishers, and supervisors on the sidewalk. One critic, a man in a three-piece suit and carrying an attaché case, kept making suggestions and was particularly annoying. Finally he said, "Here, let me do it," as he opened his attaché case and took out his own welder's mask and the correct welding rods. He was a sales rep for welding supplies, and he lived in the neighborhood! We haven't seen Alan in a while, but we wish him happy welding.
